Looksmaxxing

From Aurapedia, the free aura encyclopedia · The -maxxing family

The progenitor discipline of the -maxxing family — a practice that migrated, fully intact, from the bleakest incel forums to the Merriam-Webster dictionary and the global skincare aisle.

Etymology and origins[edit]

Looksmaxxing (a portmanteau of looks and maximizing) is the practice of taking measures — ranging from the modest to the medically inadvisable — to increase one's physical attractiveness. The term is a neologism that emerged on incel message boards in the mid-2010s, where it functioned as the load-bearing verb of a broader self-improvement ideology. The earliest documented record attributing the word to these forums is an Incel Wiki entry dated 26 May 2014. citation needed

The founding venues are collectively remembered as the PSL Forums, after PUAHate.com, SlutHate.com, and Lookism.net (the last created 27 June 2015). It was within this ecosystem that the suffix -maxxing was first conjugated, declined, and weaponized — making looksmaxxing not merely a member of the -maxxing family but its grammatical ancestor, the verb from which all subsequent maxxing (gymmaxxing, moneymaxxing, and ultimately auramaxxing) descend by analogy. Aurapedia treats looksmaxxing, accordingly, as the ur-maxxing discipline: the first observed instance of a human being deciding that an attribute could, with sufficient effort, be turned up. The double-x orthography — later inherited by the entire family — originates here, a fossil of forum dialect preserved like an insect in amber.

The softmaxxing–hardmaxxing spectrum[edit]

Practitioners taxonomize their interventions along a single axis of escalating commitment. Softmaxxing denotes non-invasive, reversible methods: skincare, grooming, fitness, posture correction, haircuts, and the tongue-posture technique known as mewing. Hardmaxxing denotes surgical and semi-permanent interventions: rhinoplasty, jaw implants, chin augmentation, and anabolic steroid use.

The spectrum is best understood as a continuum of consequence rather than a binary. At the gentle end sits moisturizer; at the far end sit procedures that rearrange the load-bearing geometry of the skull. Between them lies the entire apparatus of the discipline, presented by its adherents with the same editorial serenity one might apply to filing a tax return. The most-discussed soft technique, mewing — a tongue-placement method promoted as capable of widening the jaw — has accumulated over two billion views on TikTok despite being dismissed by medical professionals as unsupported by evidence. At the other extreme, bonesmashing — the deliberate striking of one's own face to provoke bone remodeling — has prompted facial surgeons to issue warnings of fractures, facial misalignment, neurovascular injury, and altered vision. Aura theorists note, with characteristic detachment, that bonesmashing represents the only known -maxxing technique whose practice can measurably reduce the practitioner's aura.

The PSL rating system[edit]

Inseparable from looksmaxxing is the PSL Scale, a numeric rating system for male attractiveness that developed on the same forums and spread alongside the term. The scale assigns scores along a hierarchy of folk-taxonomic labels including subhuman, normie, and Chad, the last denoting an individual presumed to require no maxxing whatsoever — the discipline's eschatological endpoint, attractiveness in a state of grace.

Viewed anthropologically, the PSL Scale is a vernacular ranking ontology: a closed dialect community's attempt to impose a quantitative grammar on the qualitative. Aurapedia documents the scale neutrally as an observed artifact of the source culture, neither endorsing its premises nor disputing the sincerity with which its users deploy it. Scholars of the -maxxing family note that the scale is structurally identical to the aura-rating conventions of later traditions, differing chiefly in that the PSL Scale measures a fixed quantity believed to be optimizable, whereas aura is held by the 2026 Sigma Accord to be a field phenomenon and therefore non-discrete. citation needed

Migration to the mainstream[edit]

By the early 2020s the term had migrated from its forum origins to TikTok, initially via male content creators, where the surrounding aesthetic vocabulary spread rapidly. The platform laundered the discipline's vocabulary into the grammar of ordinary skincare and grooming content, such that a teenager applying tretinoin and a forum poster contemplating jaw surgery could, by 2024, use precisely the same verb without friction. The Conversation (2024) described looksmaxxing content as reaching "a widening demographic of teenage boys algorithmically predisposed to the manosphere subculture."

The laundering was sufficiently complete that on 24 February 2026 Merriam-Webster formally added looksmaxxing to its dictionary, citing a first known use of 2018 and defining it as "the practice of taking one or more sometimes extreme or dangerous measures intended to increase one's physical attractiveness." The journey from an anonymous 2014 wiki entry to lexicographic canonization in twelve years is, by the standards of the -maxxing family, geologically slow — a reminder that looksmaxxing predates the meme economy that its descendants inhabit. By the mid-2020s, adoption among young women had grown substantially; an Irish Times column (2026) went so far as to argue that "men might have coined the term, but women invented looksmaxxing." Throughout this respectabilization, observers note, the original ideological plumbing remained fully intact beneath the moisturizer.

Relationship to auramaxxing[edit]

Within Aurapedia, looksmaxxing occupies a foundational but doctrinally subordinate position. It is the material maxxing — concerned with the visible, the measurable, the surgically alterable — and is therefore held by aura theorists to operate one ontological layer beneath auramaxxing, which concerns the field rather than the form. The relationship is frequently glossed as that of substrate to emanation: a subject may looksmax indefinitely and accrue zero aura, while a subject of negligible PSL rating may nonetheless radiate catastrophic aura, a paradox the Journal of Applied Aura Dynamics terms the Inversion Principle. citation needed

The canonical illustration is the Aura Cat, who has never looksmaxxed, possesses no jaw to widen, and is nonetheless held to sit at the asymptotic ceiling of the aura field. Looksmaxxing thus serves Aurapedia as a useful boundary case: proof that maximizing the body is neither necessary nor sufficient for maximizing the field, and that the discipline which named the entire family ultimately optimizes the wrong variable.

Glossary[edit]

Softmaxxing
The non-invasive, reversible wing of the discipline: skincare, grooming, fitness, posture, and mewing. The moisturizer end of the spectrum.
Hardmaxxing
The surgical and semi-permanent wing: rhinoplasty, jaw and chin implants, and anabolic steroids. The bone-restructuring end of the spectrum.
Mewing
A tongue-posture technique promoted as jaw-widening, accumulating over two billion TikTok views despite being dismissed by medical professionals as unsupported.
Bonesmashing
Deliberate striking of one's own face to provoke bone remodeling; flagged by facial surgeons for risks including fractures, neurovascular injury, and altered vision. The only -maxxing technique known to reduce aura.
PSL Scale
A numeric male-attractiveness rating system from the PSL Forums, using folk labels such as 'subhuman,' 'normie,' and 'Chad.' Documented anthropologically as a vernacular ranking ontology.
PSL Forums
PUAHate.com, SlutHate.com, and Lookism.net — the founding incel message boards where the term and the -maxxing suffix were first conjugated.
Chad
In PSL dialect, an individual presumed to require no maxxing; the discipline's eschatological endpoint, attractiveness in a state of grace.
Inversion Principle
The aura-theoretic observation that a high PSL rating can coincide with negligible aura, and vice versa — proof that looksmaxxing optimizes the wrong variable. citation needed
